In an age that stresses self-reliance and efficiency, most home-owners are reluctant to leave matters of appliance repair in the hands of someone else. The reasoning stands:
“Why pay for something I could do myself?”.
Fair enough, but can you do it yourself? More importantly, do you know how to do it yourself or will you go straight to dismantling the fridge? Do-it-yourself repair projects don’t have to be a tedious, soul-sucking process. This article centers around DIY fridge repair , specifically those of the Thermador brand, and will provide insight into troubleshooting four common problems found when using these refrigerators.
1. THE FREEZER IS FINE, BUT THE FRIDGE IS WARM?
Let’s say your French Door bottom freezer with Masterpiece and Masterpiece handles is working perfectly fine, but the top refrigerator part is warm. The first step is to check for evaporator fan function. If your evaporator fan is on, check for airflow through the diffuser, as ice formations can clog the pipe. If the evaporator fan is off, check again after 20 minutes. The freezer runs on on-and-off cycles, and should turn back on momentarily. If not, the motor to the fan may be broken and need replacement.
2. WHAT ABOUT WHEN THE FREEZER AND FRIDGE ARE TOO WARM?
Deciding which of the two solutions to employ depends on what the back wall of the freezer repair looks like. Is there a sheet of ice? If so, the problem lies in the evaporator coil, which has frozen and lost its ability to pass air into the freezer and fridge. If there is no ice, a more difficult inspection must be done. The two problem areas to check first are the defrost cycle, and the compressor and start relay. The latter can be especially dicey as the heat of the compressor, rapidly spinning sharp edges of the compressor fan, and volatile electrical circuits of the appliance as a whole can easily be fatal.
3. THE FLOOR OF MY FREEZER IS COATED IN ICE
While giving the comical impression of a tiny ice-skating rink in your freezer, this frozen-compartment ailment can also interfere with your built-in Fresh Food column by dripping water into the container. Both the freezing and the dripping are courtesy of a blockage in the defrost drain. Store your frozen goods elsewhere, unplug the freezer and allow it to defrost. After cleaning debris out of the evaporator coil hole, your freezer should once more run smoothly.
4. EVERYTHING IS TOO WET
An issue that even affects Side-By-Side Refrigerators, one may sometimes notice excess frost in the freezer compartment and abnormally abundant condensation in the refrigerator repair partition. First, check to see if the door has been open for an extended period of time, which can trap moisture in the enclosure once the door is sealed back shut. In fridges with a weak closing mechanism, you may have to tilt the refrigerator into a position where gravity works to automatically close the door.
